HAPPY NEW YEAR & HAPPY NEW DECADE

Is this really the beginning of a new decade?
This is a debate that’s driven by opinion, so given that a decade is any 10 year period, let’s go with the thought that the end of 2020 brings the end of the previous decade. That’s something to celebrate!

However, the fact that this has been a year like no other, a joyful celebration could be a particularly challenging exercise as 2020 departs. This year brought with it some very interesting and difficult times for us all to muddle through.

One big advantage to having tough times in life is that we get to learn a lot about ourselves as we experience our strengths and weaknesses in real-time.

There’s no better cure for thinking that we’ve got life sorted than a year-long barrage of floods, fires, a pandemic and having to scramble for your next roll of toilet paper.

Remember, it’s pressure that makes diamonds, and they are indestructible, and we can be too, if we play our cards right!

This is meant to be a happy time of year where we take a retrospective look at the previous 12 months to identify what the lessons were, how we’ve grown from them, what helped us, and what we could have done better.

When we acknowledge those things as positives instead of negatives, we realise that it’s the choices we make that allow us to look forward with excitement for the possibilities that lie ahead.

Until we can say “thank you 2020, and thank you Covid-19 for the gifts you gave,” your celebrations might leave you feeling a tad uncertain about what’s ahead. Learning from the stuff that life throws at us builds strength, confidence and the resilience that keeps us going, no matter what happens.

As Steve Maraboli says in his book Life, the Truth and Being Free “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient”.

You get to pick the tools that help you through, around or over the hard times. Forgiveness and gratitude for the things that make us strong are surely among the greatest tools available.

Enduring well is accomplished by personal discipline and taking responsibility for the things that are within your control.

My hope is that you will be able to say “I’ve found my way through the hard times and finished the work I needed to do …bring on 2021”.
