How to Resolve the Causes of Emotional Eating and Lose Weight

There’s nothing quite so frustrating as deciding that you’re going to take control of your eating habits and lifestyle that have contributed to major weight gain, only to discover that your best efforts aren’t producing the expected results.

All of that jogging, early morning gym visits on top of the consistent effort to avoid eating your favourite foods should produce some serious results. The next level of disappointment comes when you realise that there’s been minimal change, or that you’ve lost the same kilo or two, several times over.

So what can you do? It’s time to look outside the square for some real answers.

Studies show that comfort eating, otherwise known as emotional eating accounts for almost 90% of the cause of overeating, and the remaining causes are genetic.  To add insult to injury, overeating of fast foods and rich, energy dense foods contributes to an increase in cases of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Eating for comfort or emotional reasons serves a short-term goal, that of avoiding some of life’s uncomfortable feelings, for example, depression, loneliness and stress.  Stress hormones cause cravings for sweets, sugary drinks and high fat foods.

Doctors don’t usually recognise the emotional aspect of overeating, rather, they see only the physical causes and effects – “you eat too much, and that’s made you overweight, so stop doing that and maybe get some exercise.”  These physical answers to emotional eating problems will never be a long-term answer.

Case study:                                                                                                                                                      When I first met Cassy, she told me she had always been over weight, never been able to lose weight, tried everything, sought medical help many times throughout her life, spent a fortune on over-the-counter pills and preparations that never produced the results they promised, and now she needed answers fast.  Cassie gave me her long list of symptoms, and told of her discouragement and disappointment after each of the treatments she had previously been prescribed.  Instead of losing weight, she was losing hope of ever getting back to her goal weight.

Cassy’s Person Picture:

  • 43 years old primary school teacher, dedicated to her students, with a history of     yo-yo dieting
  • 25kg overweight, lethargic, no energy
  • Frustrated, stressed and anxious
  • Pouring emotional energy into each of her students
  • Feeling like she’s not measuring up
  • Not exercising
  • Sugar addicted and overeating the wrong things every day
  • Sluggish digestive system
  • Dull, foggy feeling in her head
  • Erratic monthly cycle with painful periods and mood swings
  • Swelling in ankles and hands
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Poor immunity

Cassy needed to know that she was in the right place to receive what she needed to regain her health and vitality, and to lose weight. I explained that while her optimal body weight and the health that supports it is still able to be regained and maintained, her current physical and emotional programming was preventing her from making the progress she desired.  We needed to identify and resolve the old emotional eating patterns of behaviour that were causing her poor choices of food and bad eating habits, replace them with positive behaviours and restore the flow of energy to all of her cells and body systems to support the physical aspects of the desired weight loss.

The Consultation Process:

Cassy’s Iris Diagnosis identified genetic inheritance and emotional stress as the causes of major disruption to her hormonal systems, thus creating all of the related health issues. This combination of genes and emotional stress was enough to make it almost impossible for Cassy to maintain any significant weight loss.

Cassy was prescribed Herbal Remedies to help restore the hormonal balance and immune systems to full function, and Flower Essences to calm her stress and anxiety. She also booked some energy healing sessions that helped change her deeply programmed eating habits and the emotions that were making her feel so “out of control.”  This put Cassy on the fast-track to recovery.  She had renewed confidence that she can sustain these changes and maintain her new healthy lifestyle.

Cassy’s Comments: “I can’t believe how well I feel! I have suffered for years, and it was so easy to overcome what seemed like an impossible situation! I have energy to exercise, eat well and I’m consistently losing weight every week.  I’m feeling much better at work too. I feel like I am in control, and I am strong and happy! Thank you, Margaret. I feel like you gave  my life back to me.”
