Socrates: “the unexamined life is not worth living”
Mae West: “you only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
You’re only one decision away from doing life your way, so what decisions do you need to make for your best life?
Good fortune, ambitions fulfilled, wealth and prosperity all appear to be the measure of a life well lived. However, the majority of people on the planet contribute to the greater good of mankind, yet their lives never look like fitting that description. Most people are doing the best that they can in their circumstances.
Some say self-worth comes from our accomplishments and the things we believe we can achieve, but self-worth comes from a much deeper place than that. It isn’t measured by what you possess either, no matter how abundant your life is, or appears to be. It comes instead by living according to who you are in your heart of hearts, and how much authenticity you bring to every interaction. These interactions are not just with other people, they also include the internal interactions that you have with yourself.
Self-worth is knowing your true value, as a spiritual being having a human experience, not willing to trade your true abundance for an illusion.
To live a truly abundant life, you may need to loosen your grip on what you believe security should look like. By acknowledging the difficulties that your life has brought, and finding the blessings that these trials have contributed in terms of learning opportunities, and the personal growth you’ve achieved, you will be led to marvel at how far you’ve come.
Having said that, some of life’s teaching moments aren’t meant to be a lifestyle choice, meaning that once you’ve understood the lesson, you get to leave the classroom. A good example of this is our relationships. Some can be confusing, or even destructive, yet when you realise that each relationship is here for a reason, a season or a lifetime, they become easier to understand and navigate. My own experience says making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear has never worked in the past for anyone, without divine intervention, no matter how much time, effort and positive thinking went into the endeavour. I should add that miracles can, and do happen, but people ultimately make their choices.
No matter what our age or experience, it is important to know that we can never be lost as long as we orient our spiritual compass in the direction of whoever or whatever we consider to be our higher power. Without knowing our higher power, the sea of life could become unnecessarily rough at times, making it difficult to maintain balance and our true course. A person’s level of self-worth makes all the difference between tragedy and triumph in our personal and public life.
We need to be aware that whatever we focus on long-term becomes our higher power, for example, being overly focused on financial security leads to materialism being your god. The same can be said of focusing too much on status, appearance, a relationship or any number of other things that give the illusion of value. Let’s not forget that focusing on our fears and worries also brings more of the thing we’re trying to avoid. An evaluation of where you spend your energies will show exactly what has become your higher power.
There’s a Chinese proverb that says “Chop wood, carry water” that demonstrates that no matter who we think we are, we still have to take care of the basics of our own life. Everyone has responsibilities that are strictly theirs to deal with, no matter where they are on the treadmill of life.
It’s not unusual for people to feel overwhelmed or that they can’t continue the upkeep of life as they have come to know it. There are as many causes for this as there are uncomfortable situations, and while some causes can be health related, it is important to know that the most powerful negative causes of any sufferings are the meanings we attribute to what’s happening, and how we feel about them. This is responsible for people getting sick, depressed, ageing prematurely, and the decrease in a person’s quality of life.
