Now that the pandemic is almost behind us and we’re returning to a new version of normal, we’re seeing evidence that some people are suffering more than others. I have been quite touched by the increased reports of anxiety and panic that my clients have been experiencing.
Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to take your life back and protect yourself against the effects of stress and other emotional triggers. As with everything else in life, balance is the key word, and knowing that there’s no “one size fits all,” you can celebrate your individuality as you reinvent your new normal.
Here are some of my favourite time-tested insights into how to stay healthy in these chaotic times…. in no particular order of importance.
F.O.C.U.S. Follow One Course Until Successful. There are scientific studies that show that multi-tasking is a myth and can’t be done. True or not? Who knows?! I do know that juggling many tasks simultaneously creates a lot of stress in our minds and bodies, so that’s not good for you because it floods your body with stress hormones and creates imbalances in your brain and body chemistry.
Minimise stress. Get out into nature, often. This will give your nervous system the rest it needs to recover from the overstimulation caused by everyday living.
Use mindfulness meditation breathing techniques. Oxygen gives you energy, makes you feel better, clears your mind and calms you down. Learning to detach from the outcome is a skill that’s well worth cultivating because, as you already know, worry has never changed anything.
Avoid infection. Develop good hygiene habits, and teach your children to do the same. Use soap to wash your hands. This is not just good advice to avoid being a statistic of a pandemic, it’s essential if you expect to continue living a long and healthy life.
Rest if you’re sick because that’s what your body needs to help it fight infection.
Reducing your stress levels will help you to keep your immune system strong.
Don’t smoke or indulge in other addictive practices. If you never pick up the habit, you never have to worry about quitting, or the health problems that come with it. However, if you already have a habit that you’d like to break, Energy and Emotional Healing techniques are the best, fastest, and most effective methods.
Maintain a healthy digestive system. Whenever you have a problem with your physical health, the question to ask is “how is your digestive system?” because the condition of your entire digestive system, (from your mouth, clear through to the other end) impacts the health and function of your blood. Your blood is your immune system, transport system for oxygen and nutrients, and is crucial to the detoxification processes of your entire body.
Keeping your intestinal flora healthy is key, and eating fresh food and managing your stress goes a long way toward this. Contrary to popular belief, some people are healthier when they eat cooked foods instead of raw. This is due to the fact that raw foods are only healthier for you if your digestive system is strong enough to digest them. This is a big topic that involves enzyme production, acids and a lot of other interesting processes, and possibly includes your family’s health history. If you have problems in your digestive system, it might also be necessary to temporarily eliminate foods containing gluten, dairy products, alcohol and sugar, one item at a time, to see if there’s a change in how you feel. With that information, you can then seek professional help to reclaim your good health. Remember, over-the-counter-supplements are not the way to go, because at this level of gut dysfunction, “medicine for the masses” is not going to help you, and it will cost you dearly in time and money.
Exercise regularly. This can reduce stress hormones, increase blood flow and body temperature and help remove bacteria and virus from your airways, not to mention the obvious benefits that come from moving your body and raising a sweat.
Keep yourself hydrated. Drink up to 2 litres of water daily. Dehydration lowers immunity and causes pre-mature aging at the cellular level. Your brain and heart are composed of around 73% water and your lungs are around 83% water, so it’s easy to understand the need to drink the all-important stuff. If you are one of the many people who don’t feel thirsty, try adding a dash of lemon or just a few grains of good quality salt to your water. This will help your cells to use the water, and I promise that you will start to enjoy the benefits of drinking water. Do you know that by the time you become aware of your thirst, you’re already starting to become dehydrated? Sipping often is better than guzzling occasionally.
Get plenty of sleep. Go to bed early. It’s your hours of sleep before midnight that create healing in your body. Not getting enough sleep has been linked to a host of medical conditions that includes depression, anxiety, mood swings, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, learning and memory problems, serious mental health disorders, and less than 7 hours of sleep per night can lead to weight gain!
So, how are you really?
