Understanding Your Body’s 7 Main Energy Centres

There are many chakras within your subtle energetic body, seven of which are major energy centres that influence your endocrine system, the glands that produce the hormones that run your body. Your energetic body and chakras affect and are affected by your emotions and just about everything that goes on around you.

This is a brief description of some of the attributes, insights, qualities and life lessons that can be gained from developing a greater understanding of the chakras and their function.

1. Base or Root Chakra is located at the base of the spine and plays a crucial role in our lives because it is the first chakra to develop, which happens between birth and about 7 years of age. This makes it the most influential of all the energy centres because what we experience during our first 7 years determines our feelings of security, the development of our inner child, belief systems, self-worth/self-image and the strength of our immune system, among other things. The quality of these experiences and the meanings we attribute to them, determines how much of a positive/negative filter these systems develop and sets the scene for just about everything that comes to us in life. Each chakra that develops in the following years throughout childhood is formed based on the information stored in the first chakra. This is particularly important to know if you are someone who was raised in a dysfunctional or abusive home.   In the physical body, the first chakra gives vitality and relates to survival, life force and instincts. The organs and glands are the colon, adrenals, kidneys, spine, bones, legs. When this chakra is well balanced, the qualities and lessons that relate to it are success, mastery of the physical body, grounding, stability, health, courage, patience, stillness. The opposite could be said when this chakra is not well balanced: self-centeredness, insecurity, violence, greed, anger, over-concern about physical survival, tension in the spine and constipation!

2. Navel Chakra or Sacral Plexuslocated in the lower abdomen, governs procreation, assimilation of food, physical wellness and vitality. The organs and glands associated with this chakra are the reproductive system and the bladder. When balanced, the qualities and lessons relating to the Navel Chakra are: giving and receiving, love, pleasure, movement, assimilation of new ideas, health, family, tolerance, working creatively and harmoniously with others. When out of balance, qualities such as overindulgence in food or sex, confusion, feeling purposeless, jealousy, possessiveness, impotence and bladder problems can develop.

3. Solar Plexus Chakralocated above the navel between the rib cages, this chakra vitalises the sympathetic nervous system, digestive processes, metabolism and emotions. Organs and glands affected are muscles, nervous system, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas and adrenal glands. Qualities and lessons relate to your Will, personal power, energy, self-mastery/ self-control, humour, laughter, transformation. If not well balanced in this chakra, qualities such as digestive issues, focus on power, recognition, anger, fear, greed and hatred can show up.

4. Heart Chakralocated in the centre of the chest, anchors your spiritual life force and energises your blood and physical body with your life force; blood circulation. Organs and glands are heart, lungs, circulatory system, thymus gland, arms, hands.   Qualities and lessons involve unconditional love, compassion, understanding, group consciousness, unity, forgiveness, acceptance, peace, contentment, harmony, openness. The opposite is what can come from not having balance in this chakra: autocracy, emotional instability, repression of love, heart and circulatory problems.

5. Throat Chakralocated in the throat area, its functions are related to speech, vibration, sound, communication. Organs and glands involved are mouth, throat, hypothalamus, thyroid and parathyroid. Qualities and lessons involve honest, kind and gentle communication, creative expression in spoken and written language, loyalty, wisdom, reliability. Imbalance in this chakra can produce poor communication skills, lack of wisdom, thyroid hormonal imbalance, poor judgement, depression.
6. Brow Chakra (Third Eye)located in the centre of the forehead between the eyebrows, it vitalises the cerebellum or lower part of the brain, central nervous system and vision. Organs and glands involved are: left eye; nose; ears; pituitary gland. Qualities and lessons relating: intuition; insight; imagination; concentration; wisdom; perception; clairvoyance. Negative qualities can show up as fear; cynicism; headaches; eye problems; unduly detached from the good things in the world.
7. Crown Chakralocated at the top of the head, its function is to vitalise the cerebrum, or top of the brain and right eye. Organs and glands relating to this chakra are cerebral cortex, central nervous system and pineal gland. Qualities and lessons: to unify the spiritual self with the human personality; becoming one with the creator; inspiration; spiritual will; perception of the quantum realm, beyond time and space; selfless service; continuity of consciousness. When unbalanced, qualities such as confusion; depression; lack inspiration; unwilling to serve; isolation and alienation.

Chakra Imbalance – What to do now

As with everything in life, there is always choice, and this means we can choose to change the things that are not serving us. It can be helpful to think about the old nature versus nurture debate which discusses whether human behaviour is determined by an environment (pre- or post-natal) or by a person’s genes.  No-one is born to fail, even if they’re born into undesirable circumstances. Even the best of circumstances can produce children and adults with less than desirable traits. This is what it means to be human.  We all get to do the belief work and emotional clean-up of our past programming, which is all the product of having your chakras out of balance. It’s never too late to heal the hurts of an unhappy past, and while it might not be easy to face, it is certainly worthwhile. And it’s easier than staying stuck the old patterns that can never bring you health and happiness.

My message to the world is to “do whatever you need to do so you can turn your life into the beautiful gift it was intended to be.” There are brilliant, scientifically proven tools available to each one of us that make this possible.  My wide range of experience has been helping people to regain their balance, health and happiness for more than two decades.  This has given me the depth of compassion, confidence and skills necessary to treat even the most stubborn ailments through finding and treating their underlying causes.
