Will Your Past Determine Your Future?

Whether we realise it or not, we are the sum total of all of the generations that have come and gone before us. We think we are living lives of our own choosing, but unless we are highly motivated to change, we are governed by the past, and our ancestors’ outlook on life rules. Have you ever heard anyone say “Oh no! I’m turning into my mother (or father)?” 

We have inherited their best and worst traits, and scientific studies have shown that it is predictable for each child born into the family, which grandparent determines the personality traits, strengths and weaknesses. Check out the book by Denny Johnson and Edith Cuffe called The Nature of Birth Order: In the Family Tree.  Learning about our grandparents and the lives they lived will help you to identify the origins of your own personality traits and health patterns. 

I recently did an internet search for the most asked questions on peoples’ minds, given that a lot of people have suffered enormously in recent years, and the nature of my work is to help people to get back on top of the thing that grind them down.  I was wanting to know the things that are of most concern to the majority of people in their present-day lives in the hopes of being able to offer something of value. 

Please forgive me for not choosing a topic for today’s discussion from the top 10 list. Top of the list is what to watch on TV, then where’s my refund, where am I? Tenth on the list is how to lose weight fast. There were millions of people asking these questions. The last question might seem to have deeper meaning, but really it reflects our expectation that whatever we want should magically appear. The truth is that sometimes we just have to do whatever it takes.

It is evident that a lot of people aren’t living their lives from a heart-centred perspective. Well, you won’t get any judgement from me there.  I’ve spent most of my past living from one payday to the next, (or not being paid at all) and finding comfort from my emotionally exhausting days in the endless supply of mind-numbing TV.  My take-away from that was that the distraction was depleting me even further.

So, while this might not be an earth shattering scientific discovery, there’s plenty of brain science that supports it.  The neuroscience of mindfulness is practiced widely to reduce stress and increase health.  Through meditation we can easily learn to access the different brain wave states to achieve more of what we want, achieve our goals and learn new habits a lot more quickly and easily than by any other method.

The basic brain waves and their function: 

  • Gamma: 35 Hz – very fast, high frequency for concentration and problem solving, learning, memory and processing information, to be more alert or switched on. 
  • Beta: 12 to 35 Hz – external attention, anxiety dominant, physically active, busy and active mind
  • Alpha: 8 to 12 Hz – very relaxed, passive attention, watching TV, reflective, restful, no stress
  • Theta: 4 to 8 Hz – deeply relaxed, inward focused, drowsiness, creativity, creativity, meditation and healing
  • Delta: 0.5 to 4 Hz – meditation, sleep and dreaming

To change your habits or some aspects of your personality or life so that the past is not what determines your future, science shows us that the power is in harnessing our own minds to manifest the desired results, like your heart’s desires, to be more creative in general, or to create your future the way you want it. The reason why this is so successful is in the fact that any existing emotional resistance, fears and other negative subconscious programming gets resolved and comes on board with the new programme.  

All of these things happen in ways that are not possible by using your conscious mind. The details you want to bring into your life won’t magically drop out of the sky without this preparation.  In the same way that a blueprint has to be created in someone’s mind and drawn up before a house can be built, everything that is ever created in our lives must first be created in our minds.  By developing a daily practice of deliberate, mindful meditation is our best way of accomplishing that.  This is the only way we can say that we are the master of our own destiny.
